Art in America

As we prepare to usher in the new decade Art in America gives us a look back with Words that defined the 2010s. The lexicon of the decade gave new meaning to 3D with technology for printing and film. Founded in 2006, the #MeeToo Movement on a Myspace page, which is now considered an ancient and outdated social media forum. It wasn’t until 2017 when the first Harvey Weinstein assault victims came public that the movement catalyzed into a game changer. Empowered other victims of sexual harassment to come forward publicly with their stories. Finally there was publicly much less tolerance for abusive behavior in the workplace.

Diller Scofidio + Renfro aka DS+R became the most influential designers of cultural institutions. The post-recession economies funded philanthropists and municipalities in the global expansion of hundreds of thousands of square feet of new museums. DS+R creative talent won some of the most notable art commissions of the decade. These include the Broad in Los Angeles, the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive. Also, the half-billion dollar renovation of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Searching for a term to describe that banana? Maurizio Cattelan’s Comedian, 2019 which has come to define Art Basel 2019. We will let the reader decide whether it is charisma or fraud that allowed the banana to be sold not once, but three times for over $120,000.

Do you know Anthropocene? That’s “the geological epoch defined by the impact of human activity on Earth’s atmosphere and ecosystems.” Artists have followed scientists with works imagining the future. They have also followed in designs for homes, clothing and public places. Prioritizing carbon neutral, energy saving and sustainable materials. Speaking of which, that’s another one to add to the list.
